Sharad Kumar, another Indian Para high jumper and a former world no. 1, claimed the Bronze medal with a high jump of 1.83m at the T42 Event. At the 2014 Asian Para Games, he won the gold medal in the high jump (T42), breaking a 12-year Asian Games record, and reclaimed the world no. 1 position.
Sharad Kumar was diagnosed with polio by the age of 2. His left leg was completely paralysed due to it. Kumars’ brother, who was fond of him, encouraged and motivated him. He began practising high jump in 7th class. He later broke his school records while competing against completely abled.
Kumar made his international debut in 2010 at Asian Games. He participated in the 2016 Summer Paralympics finishing sixth. He won Silver in the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships. He won the Gold medal in 2018 Para Asían Games Jakarta setting a new game record and continental record by jumping 1.90m. At the Tokyo Paralympics he lost the second position to Mariyapan Thangavelu, another Indian high jumper.
