Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal, popularly known as Eco-Baba, was born on 2 February,1962, at the village Seechewal, Jalandhar district of Punjab. He left DAV College & put on the saffron clothes. He took up the polluted 160km Kali Bein river, associated with Guru Nanak. Single handedly he removed all the pollutants from it. Today this river, a tributary of river Beas, is a great source of irrigation of hundreds of hectares of land. Thus began his journey, and even now he is cleaning many water bodies. Similarly he was responsible for a low cost sewage system in 50 Villages. Dr APJ Abdul Kalam met Sant Seechewal twice and applauded him for his social work. Seechewal undertook an Inter-State Awareness March in Punjab & Rajasthan in 2009 about clean environment.

Balbir Singh has set up several Schools, polytechnical institutes and Degree Colleges at Seechewal, Talwandi and Sultanpur Lodhi. Poor boys and girls get education in these temples of learning, free of cost. Sant Seechewal has distributed saplings grown in his plant nurseries to hundreds of farmers. He believes that Guru has a great role to play in our life, hence a place of worship is known as Gurudwara, the script is called Guru Mukhi, the Guru’ s teachings as Gurubani or Gurbani & Scriptures as Guru Granth Sahib. Seechewal has built a Sports Stadium at Seechewal where volleyball, kabaddi, hockey, wrestling, tug of war and other games & sports training is imparted by coaches trained at N I S, Patiala.

Sant Seechewal was honoured with many awards & prizes. He was awarded Padma Shri in 2017. SAARC has recognised Balbir Singh’s services to society by awarding him a S A A R C Award. Punjab University, Patiala, has given him an honorary Doctorate. Guru Jambheshwar University of Science & Technology, Hissar, has honoured him with a Madhu Bhasin award. Sant Seechewal’s Avatar FM Radio Station has popularised his ideas about progress through people’s participation. Seechewal is a Member of Punjab Pollution Control Board. Time Magazine has made him a “Hero of Environment”. A Marathi saying goes like thi- Bole Taisa Chale, Tyachi Vandavi Paule. It means that a person who acts on his preaching is a worthy one.

Eco- Baba Seechewal is truly such a great man who has galvanised Punjab’s youth to a glorious and a healthier path. Balbir Singh has been felicitated by Parliaments of Australia, Canada & UK. Thus Sant Seechewal has proved that each one of us can make a contribution to face climate change and global warming. Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal has got a huge following among the Nirmala Sect of Sikhs to which he belongs. One of his devotees has given a new meaning to his name thus : B for boldness A for amity L for love B for base I for ingenuity R for respect S for strength I for impact N for neatness G for goodness H for honesty S for sincerity E for energy E for eagerness C for capability H for humility E for empowerment W for workaholic A for ability L for loyalty. Sant Balbir’s work transcends into many fields & the list of his socially beneficial activities is still increasing everyday as we speak.
