Swedish company Polestar and Israeli company StoreDot have announced that they were able to charge the electric vehicle (EV) prototype “Polestar 5” from 10% to 80% battery capacity (SOC) in just 10 minutes using StoreDot’s battery, which allows ultra-fast charging with “100in5” (100 miles of travel with 5 minutes of charging). This demonstration, according to Polestar, is the world’s first of such rapid charging from 10% to 80% within 10 minutes using silicon-dominant cells in a roadworthy vehicle—not just with individual cells in a lab setting.

StoreDot’s battery cell uses a silicon anode and has an energy density comparable to that of ternary NMC cells. It is said to have a structure that exhibits high mechanical properties and cooling capabilities, and superior recyclability with a mass equal to or less than traditional batteries. Unlike mere laboratory cell performance evaluations, this time Polestar tested the charging performance using a vehicle capable of driving on the road, equipped with a 77kWh battery pack.

The test achieved a stable charging output (charging speed) of 310–380kW without the addition of any special cooling system. The XFC test, developed by engineers from Polestar and StoreDot, provided proof of the XFC battery technology that could be used in future Polestar vehicles. The test also shows that the XFC technology works with today’s DC charging infrastructure, where more and more charging stations are being installed with 350 kW or more.

With this new technology, drivers can spend less time charging during refueling stops on longer journeys and get back on the road quicker. Dr. Doron Myersdorf, CEO of StoreDot, adds: “We are very excited to share this impressive achievement today and are proud to be on this journey with Polestar, a leading car brand who envisions high performance cars with a sustainable future. We’re happy to see our partner is among the first EV car makers to acknowledge that XFC is now a necessary standard to make vast EV adoption a reality. With our extreme fast charging technology, you can add 200 miles in under 10 minutes. This breakthrough revolutionizes EV ownership experience by eradicating the barrier of range and charging anxiety once and for all. Drivers can now truly travel long distances with the same freedom and convenience as traditional petrol-powered vehicles.
