PFAS in Your Clothes Contaminates Water: Sweden Bans Forever Chemicals From Fashion by 2028

If you own a rain jacket, yoga pants, or hiking boots from the past few years, there’s a decent chance they’re slowly releasing forever chemicals into your drinking water.

PFAS, or “forever chemicals,” are industrial compounds used to make fabric waterproof and stain-resistant. They’re called forever chemicals because they don’t break down in nature—ever. Scientists have found them in virtually every human bloodstream. Nearly everyone tested shows detectable levels. The primary way they get into your body isn’t from touching treated clothing; it’s from drinking contaminated water. The secondary exposure comes from landfills and textile factories where treated garments get disposed of or manufactured, leaching PFAS into soil and groundwater.

The health impacts are serious enough that governments are finally moving. Exposure to PFAS has been linked to immune system suppression (meaning vaccines work less well), disrupted hormones, reduced fertility, and increased cancer risk. The CDC has documented these connections. Most people don’t know they’re exposed because it’s been hidden in everyday products for decades.

Sweden just announced a ban on clothing containing PFAS starting January 1, 2028. The ban covers shoes, jackets, waterproofing treatments, kitchenware, and cosmetics. Climate and Environment Minister Romina Pourmokhtari said it plainly: “PFAS have no place in clothing, cosmetics, kitchenware when effective alternatives exist.”

What’s interesting is Sweden isn’t going it alone. France already banned PFAS in textiles in January 2026. Denmark implemented prohibitions in July 2026. The European Union restricted certain PFAS chemicals in clothing and footwear starting October 2026, with broader restrictions coming in October 2027. New York banned PFAS in garments for sale back in 2023. The regulatory landscape is fragmenting across different regions with different deadlines, creating supply chain challenges for brands managing multiple compliance requirements simultaneously.

Here’s the problem: clothing brands can’t easily switch away from PFAS because the alternatives don’t work as well yet. A raincoat treated with PFAS stays waterproof and stain-resistant through dozens of washings. Current alternatives repel water but not oil-based stains, or they wash out after a few uses. Major brands like Patagonia, The North Face, and Adidas are all funding research to find better alternatives through projects like Fashion For Good’s benchmarking initiative, but none of the alternatives are ready for mass production yet.

This matters because you’re probably wearing PFAS right now if you own technical athletic wear or outdoor gear. Lululemon, Athleta, and most waterproof footwear brands contain PFAS in their standard products. The textile industry uses PFAS widely because it makes garments perform better. When these clothes eventually get thrown away or donated, they release PFAS into landfills. Manufacturing facilities in countries like Bangladesh and Vietnam, which produce most of our clothing, contaminate local drinking water supplies with PFAS wastewater.

The uncomfortable truth is that banning PFAS in clothing doesn’t solve the water contamination problem that already exists. PFAS persists for decades. People living near textile manufacturing plants in developing countries face groundwater contamination from decades of factory discharge. The contamination spreads through food chains and drinking water sources.

For consumers, the practical question is murky. Do you throw away perfectly good waterproof gear before the ban? Do you try to find PFAS-free alternatives that don’t work as well? For now, the answer is wait and watch. When Sweden’s January 1, 2028 ban takes effect, it will accelerate the market’s transition toward waterproof alternatives without forever chemicals. Until then, most people are walking around in clothes that will outlast their own bodies in landfills.
