A technological breakthrough by Nyobolt, allows for rapid charging of electric vehicle (EV) batteries in less than six minutes. Probably an EV tech-disruptor, it would indeed address some of the primary concerns associated with EVs, such as range anxiety and longer waiting periods compared to internal combustion engine cars. By significantly reducing charging times, this technology would make EVs more convenient and comparable to refueling a traditional gasoline-powered vehicle.

The concept EV developed by Nyobolt, based on the Lotus Eclipse, showcases the company’s ultra-fast charging concept. The car features a novel battery pack that can be fully recharged in less than six minutes. The planned range of approximately 155 miles (250 kilometers) on a single charge makes way for affordable prices. Moreover, efficient EVs, lower running costs, and reduced reliance on scarce raw materials would be possible.

The weight of the Nyobolt EV is closer to one tonne than two, suggesting it is relatively lightweight for an electric sports car. This is significant because heavy battery packs have been a limitation for EVs, both in terms of cost and the strain they put on the supply of battery raw materials. By developing smaller battery packs that can deliver more power and charge in less time, Nyobolt aims to provide a durable and lightweight alternative to traditional EV offerings.

Nyobolt’s battery technology claims to offer charging speeds more than double that of the fastest-charging cars currently in production. Furthermore, the company states that its batteries have been tested for over 2,000 fast charge cycles without significant degradation, indicating their long-term durability. The technology is not limited to small batteries, as larger packs used in luxury EVs, trucks, or buses can also utilize this ultra-fast charging capability once 1 MW chargers become available.

The aim is to increase the accessibility of EVs, including for the 40% of UK households who cannot charge their vehicles at home overnight. David Fairbairn, managing director at CALLUM, said: Nyobolt’s pioneering battery technology has provided us with a unique and inspiring opportunity to support in the design and execution of a vehicle set to mark the way forward for EV technology. The collaborative creativity, engineering capabilities and steadfast efforts of Nyobolt, Julian Thomson and CALLUM have resulted in an EV that is not only exciting technically for the industry, but something that is beautiful to behold, too.”

Nyobolt’s breakthrough in ultra-fast charging technology has the potential to alleviate concerns related to charging times and range limitations, making EVs more practical and appealing to a wider range of consumers. Sai Shivareddy, CEO at Nyobolt, said: “Unlocking the challenges faced by electric vehicle designers has been key to the development of our breakthrough fast-charging batteries.

Previously, enabling a light weight fast-charging vehicle was not possible without compromising its lifetime and so people have been relying on costly and large battery packs in the vehicle. With our unique technology we have achieved a six-minute charge car, and developed smaller battery packs that can deliver more power and charge in less time.” Sai continues “Our partnership with CALLUM shows how adoption of system-level technology innovations can transform the future of electric vehicles and increase accessibility of EVs, including to the 40% of UK households who can’t charge their vehicle at home overnight.”
