The Norte Fire has burned approximately 570 acres across Orange County, destroying six homes and forcing evacuations in the San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano areas, according to NBC Los Angeles and KTLA.
Evacuation orders
Evacuation orders are in place across affected zones in Orange County. The full boundaries of those zones were not specified in available sources at the time of publication. Residents in San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano should go directly to CAL FIRE and Orange County Emergency Management for current zone maps, shelter locations, and road closures.
How the Fire Spread
The fire is being tracked through local fire and emergency updates, while local reporting has described the response and evacuation picture. Santa Ana winds have been driving the fire’s spread, and those conditions remain a factor as long as the fire is active. The ignition cause has not been reported in available sources.
Earlier reports, including an update from the Sacramento Bee, cited approximately 465 acres burned. The 570-acre figure from NBC Los Angeles represents a later update and should be treated as the current best estimate. As this is a developing incident, the acreage will likely continue to change.
Community Response and Air Quality
Other Active Southern California Fires
The Norte Fire is a separate and distinct incident from two other fires Karmactive has reported on today. A fire near Malibu and a separate fire at Camp Pendleton are each operating under their own incident command, burning in different locations with different affected communities. All three fires are occurring within the same regional Santa Ana wind event, but they are not operationally connected and carry separate evacuation orders. See Karmactive’s Malibu fire report and Camp Pendleton fire report for information on those incidents.
What Is Not Yet Known
CAL FIRE has not released a containment percentage. The cause of ignition is unknown. The number of residents currently under evacuation order has not been specified beyond the fact that orders are in place. This article will be updated as CAL FIRE and local emergency agencies release new information.
