Major League Baseball will not pursue a game in or near Grand Teton National Park. Commissioner Rob Manfred sent a letter to Teton County officials and to Senator Martin Heinrich confirming the withdrawal, ending weeks of speculation about whether professional baseball would follow its Field of Dreams and Rickwood Field precedents with a national park venue.

MLB’s own account of what happened matters here: league scouts were conducting preliminary research into possible locations, not executing an approved event plan. According to reporting by the Associated Press on Manfred’s letter, environmental impact assessments and community consultation had not yet taken place before the idea was abandoned. The story that circulated in regional media — that MLB was planning a stadium or event inside the park — got ahead of where the project actually was. Commissioner Manfred told local officials that MLB would stop considering Grand Teton after opposition from Teton County commissioners, local residents, and conservation organizations.

For travelers and conservationists, MLB’s formal withdrawal means Grand Teton will not face stadium construction, traffic diversions, or light pollution from this proposed event. The league’s exit also demonstrates that local opposition and preservation concerns can halt a professional sports league’s preliminary research before it reaches the formal planning stage.

Why the Proposal Never Got Past Preliminary Research

Grand Teton covers nearly 310,000 acres and is managed under the National Park Service Organic Act, which restricts commercial activities — particularly those requiring temporary infrastructure at event scale — unless they go through formal Special Use Permit review under 36 CFR § 1.6. Grand Teton sits within the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, a critical migration corridor for pronghorn, elk, and other wildlife whose autumn movements through the area are documented through ongoing wildlife tracking programs.

The NPS is currently managing extensive construction and access changes within Grand Teton during the 2026 season on its own; conditions pages for the park show ongoing work and access restrictions across several sections independent of any MLB interest.

For baseball fans curious about where MLB goes next for a special-event game, the league has previously looked at historic minor league facilities and state parks rather than federally protected land. The history of MLB's neutral-site special events — from Dyersville, Iowa to Birmingham, Alabama’s Rickwood Field — favors venues with community infrastructure already in place. The broader question of commercial development pressure on national parks isn’t going away; Grand Teton’s resolution establishes one clear data point about where that line sits for professional sports events.

MLB has not announced an alternative venue for its next special-event game. Watch for league announcements as the 2027 regular-season schedule planning cycle begins later this fall.
