Buckle up, aviation enthusiasts! Toronto’s very own Horizon Aircraft is propelling us into a future where the skies are buzzing with innovation and the spirit of flight. With the unveiling of the enhanced prototype of their hybrid electric Vertical Takeoff and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft, the company is aiming high – a seven-seat capacity model, the Cavorite X7, is on the horizon, leaving the initial five-seater Cavorite X5 in its contrails.

Brandon Robinson, the spirited CEO of Horizon Aircraft, couldn’t contain his excitement, “Ever since we dreamt up our hybrid eVTOL, we’ve been chatting about a seven-seater. It just makes sense, it’s practical, it’s what the skies are calling for! Our fan-in-wing tech and the stellar results from testing have us dreaming bigger – maybe even a larger aircraft!”

This shift isn’t just a flight of fancy. It’s backed by positive vibes from the flight-testing of their 50% scale prototype and some serious aerodynamic, structural, and electrical brainwork. Horizon is showing they’ve got the adaptability and commitment to meet the ever-changing needs of the aviation sector. Especially in medevac, business aviation, and commercial cargo, where the word on the runway is a preference for larger aircraft with lower passenger seat mile costs.

The Cavorite X7 is gearing up to be a real game-changer in the skies. With an estimated gross weight of 5,500 pounds and a projected useful load of 1,500 pounds, this bird is set to fly high and fast, boasting an estimated max speed of 250 miles per hour and an average range of over 500 miles with fuel reserves. It’s strategically positioned to excel in a variety of missions – think medical evacuation, critical supply delivery, disaster relief, and special military ops.

Robinson, with a twinkle in his eye, added, “This bird has immense potential for regional air mobility – we’re talking about moving people and cargo across 50 to 500 miles!”

What sets the Cavorite X7 apart is its engineering with a hybrid electric power system. This innovative design allows this bird to recharge its batteries enroute, flying like a traditional aircraft. And post-mission? The Cavorite X7 is designed to recharge its battery array in under 30 minutes, showcasing efficiency and readiness for the next adventure in the skies.

Horizon Aircraft is all about innovation and a vision for sustainable flying. They envision the Cavorite X7 flying 98% of its mission in a very low-drag configuration, akin to a traditional aircraft. This approach not only amps up safety but also smoothens the ride towards certification, addressing the challenges posed by other radical new eVTOL designs.

Robinson elucidated, “The hybrid-electric system provides significant system redundancy and the ability to recharge the battery array in-flight and post-flight. Our ongoing testing of the 50% scale aircraft is instrumental in mitigating technical risk as we soar towards developing the full-scale aircraft.”

Horizon’s commitment to blue skies is evident in its efforts to cut hydrocarbon emissions by half, despite the aircraft’s ability to run on gas. The hybrid-electric design offers advantages in terms of range, speed, and useful load over fully electric models from competitors such as Joby, Archer, Lilium, and EHang.
