The Sloth Conservation Foundation protects sloths in the wild through research and conservation initiatives. SloCo was founded in 2016 by sloth researcher Dr. Rebecca Cliffe and is based in Costa Rica.
Dr. Cliffe had worked extensively in the field with sloths for over 10 years and has conducted research and published numerous scientific papers. Her study revolves around ecology, biology, genetics and physiology of sloths.
The three-fingered sloth and her baby were captured on camera in the rainforest canopy. Sloths are slow-moving arboreal mammals found in Central and South America. The Hoffmannss two-toed sloth is one of six extant species. These animals spend most of their lives hanging from tree branches and move very slowly to conserve energy. The baby sloth clings to its mothers belly as she navigates the canopy. Research by the Sloth Institute and the Toucan Rescue Ranch studies their behavior and habitat needs. Conservation efforts protect their rainforest homes through reforestation and protected area management.
The three-fingered sloth moves very slowly through the rainforest canopy using its long claws to grip branches. These animals spend 90 percent of their lives hanging upside down from tree branches and move so slowly that algae grows on their fur providing natural camouflage. The sloths diet consists mainly of leaves which are difficult to digest so they have a slow metabolism and spend up to 30 minutes eating just 100 grams of leaves. The baby sloth shown in the video was rescued from illegal wildlife trade and is being rehabilitated at a rescue center before release into protected rainforest habitat.
