In a significant move to boost hands-on STEM learning, IIT Palakkad, alongside IEEE Kerala, IEEE MOVE INDIA, and IEEE SIGHT Kerala, organized “STEM ON MOVE 2023” on October 28-29, 2023. This event, focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, brought together 33 students from Kerala for a two-day deep dive into practical technology.

The workshop started with a detailed session on Surface Mount Device (SMD) components. Students learned about SMD soldering and how to use reflow ovens and stencil applicators. This was a real chance for them to get to grips with the nuts and bolts of modern electronics.

A key part of the event was hands-on training with laser cutters and 3D printers. This gave the undergraduates a direct look at the latest tech tools. Such practical experience is crucial in today’s fast-evolving tech world.

But “STEM ON MOVE 2023” wasn’t just about learning. It also focused on sustainability and social responsibility. The students made 50 solar-powered mobile chargers, all to be donated to IEEE MOVE INDIA for their disaster resilience work. This project showed how STEM skills can have a real-world impact, especially in renewable energy like solar technology.
