The Indian Railways and IIT Kanpur are collaborating to develop India’s first hydrogen-fuelled train engine. This groundbreaking initiative is set to revolutionize the Indian railway system, making it more sustainable and eco-friendly.

A cutting-edge lab called “Center for Railway Research” has been established by IIT Kanpur. This center is dedicated to developing the engine’s technology and will house advanced research facilities along with a team of skilled scientists and engineers.

The hydrogen-powered engine will be manufactured at the Electric Loco Shed, FMGD (Fazalganj), Kanpur. This facility has the expertise and infrastructure to handle such complex projects. Indian Railways has allocated 5 billion rupees for this project, demonstrating its commitment to innovation and sustainability.

The startups of IIT will collaborate with the Railways to develop and supply engine components and spare parts. The focus of the project will be on developing energy-saving technologies for future trains, aiming to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.
