The West Lake Cultural Landscape of Hangzhou is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The World Heritage Committee inscribed the property under criteria (ii), (iii) and (vi).

The listed property comprises West Lake and the hills around it on three sides. UNESCO says the landscape has inspired poets, scholars and artists since the 9th century. That long cultural record is part of what distinguishes the designation from a listing focused on one building or monument.

What the World Heritage listing covers

The cultural landscape includes temples, pagodas and pavilions, as well as gardens, ornamental trees, causeways and artificial islands. These elements are part of the listed landscape alongside the lake and the surrounding hills.

UNESCO’s formal decision records the three criteria used for inscription. For readers looking at heritage places through a travel lens, Karmactive has also examined how tourism development can affect access to natural and cultural places.

West Lake’s World Heritage status is therefore about a whole cultural landscape: water, hills and built features considered together. The official listing is the clearest reference for the boundaries and heritage basis of the site.
