Which Starfish Seafood smoked salmon is recalled in the latest FDA notice? Starfish Seafood Premium Cold Smoked Norwegian Salmon Sliced is being recalled due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. The recalled product is sold frozen in 8-ounce (227-gram) vacuum-sealed packages under UPC 4751048940099, Lot D080-148, with a best-before date of November 27, 2027 (27.11.2027), and is labeled Product of Latvia.

The recall followed sampling by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets, which indicated potential Listeria monocytogenes in the product. The salmon was imported and distributed by Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc., a Brooklyn, New York-based distributor, to retailers in New York, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. No illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall.

This recall is separate from an earlier recall of the company’s Cold Smoked Seafood Trio, a different product sold under lot D139149161-153 in New York, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The two recalls involve different products and different lot numbers, and consumers should not assume that clearing one lot number also clears the other.

Although this salmon is sold frozen, freezing does not make a contaminated product safe to eat. A package that matches the recalled lot should not be eaten merely because it has been kept frozen. Consumers should use the lot, UPC and date printed on the package to decide whether it is included.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious illness in pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems; in pregnancy, infection can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth. Healthy people who are exposed may experience fever, muscle aches, and digestive symptoms such as nausea or diarrhea, or may have no symptoms at all.

Consumers who have the recalled salmon, matching Lot D080-148, the UPC, and the November 27, 2027 best-before date printed on the package, should not eat it. The product should be returned to the place of purchase for a refund. Questions about the recall can be directed to 718-858-6720, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern.

Only product matching Lot D080-148 is covered by this recall. Other Starfish Seafood products, and other lots of this same salmon, are not included in this notice, and shoppers who are unsure whether their package matches should check the lot number and UPC printed on it against the details listed above before deciding whether to keep or return it.
