The United States has a new approved sunscreen active ingredient for the first time in 25 years. Bemotrizinol, commonly abbreviated as BEMT, has reached US store shelves after receiving approval from the Food and Drug Administration, ending a long period during which the range of chemical filters available in American sunscreen products had not changed.

Bemotrizinol provides protection across both the UVA and UVB wavelength ranges. UVA rays are associated with deeper skin effects and long-term aging changes; UVB rays are the primary driver of sunburn. A filter that addresses both ranges in a single ingredient gives manufacturers a formulation option that was not previously available under US regulatory approval.

The FDA’s review drew on data from more than 500 participants in studies lasting up to 21 days. A central question in evaluating any sunscreen active ingredient is how much the body absorbs through the skin and into the bloodstream. The studies found that systemic absorption of bemotrizinol was minimal — low enough that the agency determined it did not raise safety concerns sufficient to prevent approval.

That finding matters in the context of how the US sunscreen approval process has worked in recent years. Questions about the systemic absorption levels of other chemical filters had contributed to a gap between the ingredients available in the United States and those approved in Europe and other markets, where bemotrizinol and similar compounds have been used in products for years. Bemotrizinol’s approval narrows that gap.

What the new ingredient means for shoppers

The first new FDA-approved sunscreen active ingredient in 25 years is bemotrizinol, a broad-spectrum UVA and UVB filter now available in the US market. Shoppers can identify products containing it by checking the active-ingredients list on any sunscreen label.

There is no reason to discard sunscreen products already purchased. Existing formulations continue to offer protection when applied correctly and in sufficient quantity. What the approval of bemotrizinol adds is a wider range of choices: manufacturers can now develop products using the new filter, which may result in formulations with different textures, finishes or sensitivity profiles than those currently available.

That practical point is relevant to sun-protection habits more broadly. Whether people apply sunscreen, and apply enough of it, depends partly on whether they find a product comfortable to use. A broader range of formulations increases the chances that more people find one they will use consistently and at the amounts needed for the labelled protection factor to hold. The basic guidance has not changed: apply broadly, apply enough, and reapply after swimming or heavy sweating. The new ingredient expands options within that existing framework.
