Florida voters selected their nominees for governor on Tuesday, Aug. 18, with U.S. Representative Byron Donalds claiming the Republican nomination and former U.S. Representative David Jolly winning the Democratic primary. The winners will face each other in November’s general election for a seat vacated by term-limited Gov. Ron DeSantis. The race draws national attention as one of the year’s most closely watched gubernatorial contests.
Donalds captured 47.8% of the GOP primary vote with 99% of precincts counted, according to NBC News. State Senator Jay Collins finished second with 25.2%, while James Fishback, a business executive, took third with 10.5%. Donalds’ roughly 22-point margin over his nearest rival gave him a decisive win in a field of candidates seeking to lead the nation’s third-largest state. Former President Donald Trump endorsed Donalds ahead of the vote.
On the Democratic side, Jolly won with 61% of the primary vote. Dayna Foster, a state representative, placed second with 15.1%, and Dotie Joseph finished third with 9.6%. Jolly’s commanding margin gave him unified support among Democratic voters heading into the general election matchup.
The general election sets up an unusual dynamic. Jolly, a former U.S. House member, is a Republican-turned-Democrat — a political shift that reflects the changing nature of Florida politics. He served in Congress as a Republican before leaving the party, eventually joining Democrats. Donalds represents Florida’s 19th Congressional District and has risen in prominence within Republican circles. His primary victory positions him as the frontrunner heading into November, particularly given Trump’s backing and the GOP’s traditional strength in statewide races across Florida.
Voters will head to the polls again in November to decide between the two nominees. Both campaigns are expected to intensify their efforts in the coming weeks, with the general election shaping up as one of the most competitive governor’s races in the country.
