Cambridge's medieval walls have witnessed centuries of achievement - but none as bittersweet as Jason Arday's journey from non-verbal child to youngest Black professor, ending in scandal and silence. A Cambridge professor who became the university’s youngest-ever Black professor has died at 41, after resigning amid allegations of plagiarism that friends say left him devastated.

Jason Arday, 37 when he reached the rank of professor at Cambridge in 2023, was found dead in Battersea, south London, on Friday, August 14. Police said the death was unexpected “but is not believed to be suspicious.” He had resigned from his post as Professor of Sociology of Education after The Times reported plagiarism allegations on July 24.

Arday’s achievement was extraordinary. Born non-verbal, he did not speak until age 11 and remained illiterate into his late teens. He overcame dyslexia, developmental delays, and autism to become a teacher, then climb to the highest ranks of academia. His memoir, “Great And Unfortunate Things,” is due for UK release on August 27.

The plagiarism row centered on his PhD thesis from 2015. Nathan Cofnas, a researcher previously sacked from Cambridge in 2024, raised allegations that passages in Arday’s work closely matched other sources. The Times found near-identical text in several sections.

Arday denied plagiarism. He admitted to “mistakes” and attributed them to how his autism shaped the way he processed and reused material. An investigation by Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded his doctorate, concluded there was no plagiarism. Cambridge announced an independent investigation after Arday’s resignation.

The timeline matters. A PhD examination in 2015 went eleven years without issue. When scrutiny came, it came swiftly and publicly. Kehinde Andrews, a friend and professor himself, told the BBC that Arday had been “very down” and “felt there was no way out.” Arday lost weight. His family said “the campaign of misinformation was too much for Jason.”

The context is stark. Only 1% of UK professors are Black. Arday’s rise was celebrated globally as a breakthrough. His fall, when it came, played out in front of everyone.

Universities are grappling with how to support academics facing intense public scrutiny. Mental health resources in academic settings remain underfunded and understaffed, a challenge that extends far beyond any single institution.
