Rocket Lab just won a $397 million contract to design and operate a constellation of satellites for the U.S. Space Force. This isn’t a launch contract—it’s a comprehensive mission covering satellite development, deployment, and operational management.

The satellite system is called Flatellites and serves the Space-Based Airborne Moving Target Indicator (SB-AMTI) program. This is complex acronym territory, but here’s the translation: The Space Force wants satellites that can track moving military targets from space. Rocket Lab will build and manage these orbital sentries.

The contract was awarded on August 4, 2026, as part of broader Space Force modernization efforts. Rocket Lab’s role: design the Flatellites, launch them on Neutron rockets (the company’s heavy-lift launch vehicle under development), and operate the constellation to provide persistent surveillance capabilities.

What makes this significant? First, it’s validation that Rocket Lab’s Neutron rocket design is progressing toward operational readiness. Second, it demonstrates that the Space Force is willing to contract with private space companies for mission-critical defense capabilities.
