Rare July Snow Warning Issued for Alaska’s Central Brooks Range – Winter Conditions in Summer

The National Weather Service issued a rare midsummer snow warning for Alaska, cautioning residents and travelers about unexpected winter conditions developing in late July 2026. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for the Central Brooks Range, including the Dalton Highway, with expected snow accumulations between 2 and 6 inches.

The weather advisory warns of potential for reduced visibility due to blowing snow and a light glaze of ice on the roads, lasting through 4 a.m. AKDT on Monday, July 27. Precipitation is expected to start as rain before changing to snow with a brief period of wintry mix in between, with widespread 2 inches of snow accumulation expected and up to 6 inches possible at higher elevations.

Monday’s forecast still carries isolated snow showers through the morning, with highs only in the upper 30s to lower 40s Fahrenheit and north winds of 15 to 20 mph. This is a rare occurrence for Alaska’s summer season, as it’s not unheard of to get snow in the summer, but it’s still unusual for such significant accumulation.

The conditions reflect full winter weather patterns despite the calendar showing late July. The combination of heavy precipitation transitioning from rain to snow and frigid temperatures indicates a significant weather system moving through the region.

The snow warning creates potential hazards for travelers on the Dalton Highway, which extends through remote terrain connecting Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay. Winter driving conditions require appropriate vehicle preparation, reduced speeds, and caution to avoid weather-related accidents on the remote and exposed route.
