A surfer has driven himself to hospital after being twice bitten by a shark reportedly chasing a seal offshore from Kangaroo Island.
The attacked occurred at the Sewer surf break in D’Estrees Bay on the island’s southern shoreline. Police said the man, in his 50s, was bitten on the leg and drove himself to hospital in Kingscote for treatment.

According to Shark Watch SA, it was reported the shark was chasing a seal around the bay when the seal used the surfer as a decoy. Authorities were told the shark involved was likely a large bronze whaler based on a public report submitted to the South Australian Shark Watch Alert.
The location is within Cape Gantheaume Conservation Park. Sightings data are recorded in the state’s shark sightings log.
