General Motors (GM) is recalling more than 40,000 Chevrolet Blazer EVs due to a potentially dangerous parking brake defect. The recall affects approximately 40,233 vehicles from model years 2024 and 2025.
The issue stems from a flawed design in the rear parking brake wiring harness, which can become damaged or corroded during normal driving. When this happens, two serious safety risks emerge: the parking brake might engage unexpectedly while you’re driving, or it could fail completely when your vehicle is parked.
“If the parking brake activates while driving, there is an increased risk of a crash,” according to the recall notice. Similarly, if the parking brake fails to work properly when the vehicle is parked, it could roll away unattended – another serious crash risk.
The problem affects Blazer EVs manufactured between October 2022 and January 31, 2025. Vehicles built after this date have a redesigned, more flexible harness and aren’t included in the recall. The issue doesn’t affect non-EV Blazer models.
GM discovered the problem through an investigation that began in May 2025, prompted by customer complaints. The company found that the original harness design, supplied by Lear Electrical Systems De Mexico, allowed wires to bend sharply, causing damage over time. Field data revealed 97 complaints related to this issue between August 2023 and May 2025, including two reports of rear-wheel lock-up while driving and one case of parking brake failure.
Some owners reported seeing “service parking brake” messages on their dashboard or experienced an inability to shift out of park while attempting to drive.
To fix the problem, GM dealers will inspect the wiring harness in affected vehicles. If no damage is found, the harness will be rerouted to reduce stress and anti-abrasive tape will be installed for extra protection. If the harness is already damaged, it will be replaced completely. All repairs will be done free of charge.
