On September 5, 2026, US forces struck three Iranian crude oil carriers in the Gulf area. This followed an attack by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on two US Navy warships using ballistic missiles.

**What US Central Command says:** CENTCOM stated that IRGC forces launched ballistic missiles toward a US aircraft carrier and a guided-missile destroyer. Both US warships evaded the attacks. No American personnel were harmed. According to CENTCOM, US forces then struck three IRGC crude oil carriers it described as involved in logistics operations supporting regional networks.

**What Iran says:** Iranian state media reported that its navy attacked US destroyers with missiles and drones in retaliation for what it described as prior US aggression against Iranian oil tankers.

The U.S. and Iranian accounts differ substantially over the circumstances and sequence of the confrontation. Verifying the precise sequence independently is not possible from publicly available information at this time.

What is not in dispute is the location’s significance. The events occurred near Kharg Island, Iran’s principal crude oil export hub in the Persian Gulf. The Strait of Hormuz — the narrow passage connecting the Persian Gulf to the broader ocean — is a critical global energy chokepoint. The U.S. Energy Information Administration estimated that about one-fifth of global petroleum liquids consumption passed through the Strait of Hormuz in the first half of 2025.

The military and diplomatic picture is still developing.
