For the millions of Americans navigating disability claims, the new Social Security disability tracker is changing how claimants follow their case. Checking status has long meant calling the agency, waiting on hold, and often getting limited information anyway. That is starting to change.
The Social Security Administration announced on July 21, 2026 that it has expanded its “my Social Security” online portal with a new Claim Status Tracker for disability claimants. The tool lets anyone with a pending or recently decided disability claim or appeal view where their case stands in real time, without a phone call.
The tracker covers the two most consequential stages of the disability process: the Hearings level, where an administrative law judge reviews the case, and the Appeals Council level, where claimants can challenge a hearing decision. Both are stages where wait times often stretch into months or years and communication from the agency has historically been sparse.
What the Social Security Disability Tracker Shows Claimants
The specific updates the tracker provides include notification when a hearing office receives a Request for Hearing, status updates as the office reviews the case file and prepares for the hearing, confirmation when a decision has been issued, and Appeals Council status updates including when a request for review is received and when the Council finishes its review. Each update represents a point in the process that previously required a phone call or a letter to confirm.
Beyond status tracking, the update allows claimants to submit certain adjudication forms electronically — a shift away from mailed paper documents. Claimants can also now access proffer letters and 26 additional types of hearing notices directly in the secure Message Center inside their account. A proffer letter is the official notice the agency sends when new evidence is added to a case after a hearing. Receiving it quickly in an online account rather than waiting for physical mail can matter significantly for a claimant’s ability to respond before a decision is finalized.
Those without a “my Social Security” account can create one at ssa.gov/myaccount. The SSA also announced updated access for appointed representatives — attorneys and advocates who work on behalf of claimants can now view case status for their clients through the portal as well.
The Social Security disability program serves millions of people with serious long-term conditions, including neurological disorders, chronic pain, vision impairment, and mental illness. Many of those claimants face additional barriers in navigating bureaucratic processes on top of managing their health. The burden is particularly acute for those dealing with compounding health crises — much like those documented during COVID-19’s stealthy winter surge that contributed to over 10,000 deaths in December — where delayed benefits can mean serious hardship. Tools that reduce uncertainty and eliminate the need for repeated phone inquiries are a practical improvement for a population that often has few other options while their cases move through the system.
