Global battery leader CATL has unveiled a massive energy storage system that could power a typical German home for six years on a single charge. The new system, called TENER Stack, packs enough power to charge 150 electric cars.
The company showcased this breakthrough at a major energy show in Munich, Germany this May. What makes it special? It’s the first mass-produced battery system that can store 9 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy – marking a significant advancement in energy storage capacity.
“We are not only delivering an energy storage product, but a solution for energy accessibility that can be applied globally,” says Hank Zhao, CATL’s technology chief in Europe. He adds that 9 MWh isn’t even the limit – they’re working on packing even more power into future versions.
Think of it as a giant power bank for your neighborhood. These systems help store extra electricity when solar panels and wind turbines produce more than needed, saving it for later use. This helps keep electricity flowing steadily, even when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing.
Safety First
The system uses lithium iron phosphate batteries, known for their stability and safety. CATL has added extra protection features, including sensors that are 40% more sensitive and can trigger safety systems 35% faster than before. The container can even withstand major earthquakes and the strongest hurricanes.

Moving such powerful batteries isn’t easy – they’re heavy. CATL solved this problem with a clever “two in one” design. The 20-foot tall unit splits into two parts, each weighing less than 36 tons. This means it can be transported on regular roads in almost any country, cutting special transport costs by 35%.
Real Benefits for Power Companies and Communities
When power companies install these systems, they need fewer containers than before. For example, to store 800 MWh of power, they need one-third fewer containers compared to older 6 MWh systems. This saves space and cuts construction costs by about 20%.
The system doesn’t lose power capacity for at least five years – a significant improvement over traditional batteries that typically degrade faster. This means more reliable power storage for communities that depend on renewable energy.
CATL has already proven its expertise with over 1,700 energy storage projects worldwide. These projects work in all types of weather, from desert heat to arctic cold.
Amanda Xu, who leads CATL’s energy storage division in Europe, explains why this matters: “To meet the expectation of a system that has high energy density, small footprint, simpler configuration, and flexible deployment, we bring the latest CATL TENER energy storage solution.”

The TENER Stack operates quietly too – at just 65 decibels from one meter away, about as loud as a normal conversation. This makes it suitable for use in cities and residential areas where noise concerns often limit infrastructure projects.
This advancement comes at a crucial time when data centers, factories, and homes need more reliable power than ever. The system helps balance the power grid, storing excess energy during low-demand periods and releasing it when needed most. The company plans to start mass production at their European facility in 2025.
