P. East Trading Corp. of Bronx, NY has recalled its “Salted Smoked Split Herring” due to improper evisceration, creating a potential risk for deadly botulism poisoning.
The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets discovered the problem during routine sampling. Lab tests confirmed the fish, which measures over 5 inches in length, wasn’t properly eviscerated before processing.
This is dangerous because Clostridium botulinum bacteria spores concentrate in fish guts. When not removed, these spores can produce a deadly toxin that causes botulism, a rare but life-threatening illness.
The recalled herring was distributed to retail locations across New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut in 18-pound wooden boxes with container code Lot 1 PRC5073. The product, manufactured by Canada’s Sea Star Seafood Ltd., was likely repacked into smaller deli-style containers at retail locations.
“Many consumers won’t see the original packaging,” said Jay Hong, Office Manager at P. East Trading Corp. “Check with your store if you’ve recently purchased smoked herring.”
The FDA has published a complete list of 69 affected retail locations on its website, including markets like Food Bazaar Supermarkets, Key Food, and numerous local grocers.

No illnesses have been reported so far, but consumers should watch for botulism symptoms, which typically appear within 18-36 hours after eating contaminated food. Warning signs include:
- General weakness and dizziness
- Blurred or double vision
- Difficulty speaking or swallowing
- Trouble breathing
- Muscle weakness
- Abdominal distension and constipation
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience these symptoms after consuming this product.

Even if the fish looks and smells normal, it can still contain the odorless, tasteless botulinum toxin. Consumers who purchased this herring should not eat it and should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
