A Florida tourist died after falling more than 300 meters—approximately 1,000 feet—into a steep canyon in Italy’s Dolomites while stepping off a marked trail to take a photograph. Michelle Alejandra Rubio-Leiva, 36, of Miami, was hiking the Forcella Pordoi trail in the Sella group of Trentino with her sister on October 23 when she slipped. The trail sits at 2,848 meters—9,344 feet—above sea level and is accessible only by cable car, placing hikers at extreme altitude without a gradual ascent. Rubio-Leiva and her sister had moved off the marked path onto a steep, exposed upper cliff face to photograph the view when she lost footing on loose gravel and fell. A Trentino Alpine and Cave Rescue helicopter team recovered her body from the canyon below.

The Forcella Pordoi trail is among the Dolomites’ most accessible extreme-altitude routes because the cable car eliminates the hours of ascent that typically precede such elevations. Italian Alpine Rescue has noted that more than 80 people have died in the Dolomites in 2026, with steep inclines, loose gravel, and falling rocks among the leading causes of fatal incidents. Cable-car access creates conditions where day visitors arrive at 9,300-foot elevations without the experience or footwear typical of hikers who ascended on foot, and exposed ridgelines at those heights leave no margin for error. Tourists using cable cars to reach Dolomite passes like Forcella Pordoi must stay strictly within marked trail boundaries, as stepping even a short distance onto uncompacted alpine scree for a photograph exposes hikers to loose gravel slides that have contributed to over 80 fatalities in the range in 2026.
