Firefighters respond to a California wildfire as the Norte Fire evacuation update continues.

Containment on the Norte Fire in Orange County has jumped to 25%, according to CAL FIRE’s latest incident log update, a sharp improvement from the figures reported in Karmactive’s initial coverage of the fire’s ignition near San Clemente. The 570-acre fire, which started at 11:33 a.m. on October 16 near Portico Del Norte and Eminencia Del Norte, has damaged or destroyed six homes, including four near Via La Mirada.

CAL FIRE’s updates, logged at 7:42 p.m. and 10:14 p.m. on October 17, also confirm that federal disaster assistance has been approved through a FEMA Fire Management Assistance Grant (FMAG), cleared at 12:31 a.m. the same day. Fire officials have also redrawn the evacuation map, splitting the former Zone SJC10 into two separate zones: SJC10-A, which remains closed, and SJC10-B, which has reopened alongside Zone SCL13 in San Clemente. The 25% figure is a marked jump from the 0% containment reported shortly after ignition and the 5% level logged through much of Friday.

Mandatory evacuation orders remain in place for Zones SJC04, SJC05, SJC10-A, and SCL12. CAL FIRE’s repopulation notice states the remaining zones stay closed “due to an active fire line and windy conditions, with a heat advisory also in effect.” In total, mandatory evacuation orders initially covered 4,600 homes and roughly 16,000 residents across San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.

Residents still displaced can reach overnight shelter at the San Juan Capistrano Community Center (25925 Camino del Avion) and the San Clemente Community Center (100 Calle Seville). Capistrano Unified School District dismissed classes early as the fire broke out.

Notably, California’s Office of Emergency Services pre-positioned five engines, a bulldozer, a water tender, a helicopter, and 45 personnel in Orange County roughly 24 hours before the fire ignited, after weather models flagged extreme coastal brush drying tied to offshore winds. Despite that early staging and air-tanker drops when the fire was still 10 acres, dry gusts pushed flames into six structures within three hours.

For readers tracking Southern California’s other active wildfire, Karmactive is also updating developments on the Henderson Fire burning on Camp Pendleton, where containment has also climbed sharply in the same reporting window.
