Spain’s Extreme Heat Wave: Temperatures Exceed 45°C Across Andalusia, Stretching Power Grids

Sunlit agricultural expanses and urban centers across Andalusia endure intense atmospheric compression as persistent high-pressure ridges trap subtropical air masses over the Iberian Peninsula. With ground stations recording values of 45.1 degrees Celsius and warm Mediterranean waters preventing nighttime drops below 25 degrees, consecutive heatwaves accelerate regional reservoir depletion and test the limits of municipal power grids. Southern Spain has experienced severe heat during early September 2026, with temperatures reaching levels that strain infrastructure and pose health risks. On September 3, Spain’s official weather agency AEMET recorded temperatures exceeding 45 degrees Celsius across multiple locations in Andalusia.

Sevilla Tablada reached 45.1 degrees Celsius. Other locations recorded similar extremes: Fuentes de Andalucía at 44.5 degrees, Fuencaliente at 44.4 degrees, Morón de la Frontera at 44.3 degrees, and Andújar at 44.3 degrees. These measurements come from official weather stations, making them reliable indicators of actual atmospheric conditions.

A strong high-pressure ridge positioned over southwestern Europe contributed to the extreme temperatures. Mediterranean Sea surface temperatures have recorded widespread positive anomalies, meaning the water is warmer than normal. Warm Mediterranean waters can reduce the temperature difference that normally drives some coastal cooling, which affects nighttime conditions in coastal areas and raises electricity demand for cooling.
