A massive wildfire has torched Belgium’s High Fens nature reserve, burning 3,000 hectares (7,400 acres) of peat bog and heathland—the country’s largest modern wildfire since 1911, when an even larger fire consumed the same area. The blaze ignited on Friday, August 13, intensifying amid Belgium’s fifth heatwave of the summer, with temperatures reaching 37°C (98.6°F).
The precise cause remains unknown—rescue teams could not access the remote ignition point in the reserve’s challenging peatland terrain.
European Union Deploys Aerial Reinforcement
The European Union activated its Civil Protection Mechanism, dispatching two water-bomber aircraft from Sweden and four helicopters—two Belgian and two Dutch—to support ground crews. Approximately 250 emergency personnel from Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands converged on the fire zone to establish defensive perimeters.
“The conditions remain challenging,” said Interior Minister Bernard Quintin in a Sunday briefing. “But the defensive line protecting evacuated areas is holding.”
Evacuations Across the Border
Around 600 residents in the Belgian municipalities of Waimes and Butgenbach were evacuated on Saturday evening as winds shifted and the fire advanced toward populated valleys. About 20 displaced residents spent the night in a local sports hall, according to the Liège governor’s office.
Across the German border, the town of Monschau reported the fire came within 3 km of the boundary by Sunday morning. German authorities advised residents in three Monschau districts to leave temporarily due to heavy smoke, though flames were not expected to cross into German territory.
The High Fens fire represents one manifestation of a broader crisis engulfing Europe. Across the European Union, approximately 500,000 hectares have burned in 2026, reflecting intensifying wildfire pressure driven by climate change and prolonged heat. The High Fens fire, burning in peat bogs that store significant amounts of carbon, carries additional environmental consequences beyond the immediate threat to residents and infrastructure.
