A New Jersey food company has recalled more than 64,000 pounds of pork buns after government inspectors found they contain sesame that isn’t listed on the label.

ACC Central Kitchen LLC of Thorofare, New Jersey, is pulling approximately 64,008 pounds of its “3 Meals A Day SOUPY PORK BUN WITH CRAB ROE” products from store shelves. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) discovered the problem during a routine inspection at the plant.

This isn’t a minor issue. The FSIS has classified this as a Class I recall – their highest risk category. This means there’s a reasonable chance that eating these pork buns could cause serious health problems or even death for people with sesame allergies.

The affected products were made on various dates since November 28, 2023, and were shipped to retail stores across New York. They come in 8.45-ounce sleeve tray packages with lot codes ranging from 052625 to 090626. Consumers can identify the recalled items by looking for the establishment number “EST. 40031” inside the USDA inspection mark.

So far, no one has reported getting sick from eating these pork buns. However, people with sesame allergies could experience severe reactions if they consume the product.

For people with sesame allergies, exposure can trigger serious adverse health consequences. Sesame is a known allergen that requires proper labeling on food products.

If you’ve bought these pork buns, the FSIS advises you not to eat them. Instead, throw them away or return them to the store where you bought them. The agency is particularly concerned that some of these products might still be in consumers’ freezers.

The FSIS routinely conducts “recall effectiveness checks” to make sure companies properly notify customers about recalls and take steps to remove recalled products from store shelves.

“The issue was discovered during routine in-plant verification activities when FSIS inspection personnel noticed that the sesame ingredient used in the pork buns was not declared on the product label,” the FSIS stated.

This recall highlights the critical importance of accurate food labeling, especially for products containing common allergens. When food companies fail to list all ingredients, they put people with food allergies at serious risk.

The FSIS continues to monitor the situation as ACC Central Kitchen works to remove the affected products from stores and consumers’ homes.
