For healthy individuals, symptoms typically include fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Pregnant women face additional risks as Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that Listeria causes about 1,600 cases and 260 deaths annually in the United States, making it the third leading cause of death from foodborne illness.
