The UK government has officially switched on full enforcement of its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme from 25 February 2026. Airlines, ferry and rail operators are now legally required to verify every passenger’s digital travel permission at check-in — and anyone without it can be refused boarding before they ever reach the UK border. Alongside this, a unique challenge has emerged for British dual nationals, thousands of whom are scrambling to get the right documents. Use the interactive tool below to instantly find out what you need.
Find Out What You Need to Travel
Select your passport type and travel situation to get an instant answer.
✈️ You need a UK ETA
Your nationality requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before you travel to the UK. Apply via the UK ETA app (Google Play or App Store). Cost: £16. Valid 2 years, multiple entries, stays up to 6 months. Most decisions take minutes. Apply at least 3 working days before travel.
📄 You likely need a UK Visa or eVisa
Your nationality is not on the ETA visa-free list — you will need a UK visa to travel. If you already have a UK eVisa, make sure your passport details are fully updated in your UKVI account before travel, or you risk boarding denial.
✅ You are exempt from ETA
British citizens do not need an ETA. Present your valid British passport at check-in and the UK border. Make sure it is current and not expired.
⚠️ Dual Nationals — Read Carefully
You cannot apply for an ETA as a British citizen. But carriers cannot verify your British citizenship using only a foreign passport. To board, you must present either: (1) a valid British passport, or (2) a Certificate of Entitlement (CoE). A British passport costs £94.50. A CoE costs £589. From 26 Feb 2026, CoEs are issued digitally and linked to your UKVI account.
✅ Irish Citizens Are Exempt
Irish citizens do not need an ETA or visa to travel to the UK. You may use your Irish passport at check-in and at the UK border.
How to Apply for a UK ETA — Step by Step
Tap each step for details.
1
Download the UK ETA App
Available on Google Play and Apple App Store.
Download the official UK ETA app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Only use the official government app — avoid third-party services that may charge extra fees.
You’ll need to enter your passport details, provide a suitable photo (taken through the app), and answer a short set of questions on suitability and any past criminal history. Use the exact same passport you’ll use to travel.
3
Pay £16
Card payment. The fee is set to rise to £20 in future.
The current ETA fee is £16. The government has confirmed it plans to raise this to £20 at a future date. There are no hidden fees when applying through the official app.
4
Receive Your Decision
Most decisions are automatic within minutes.
The majority of applicants receive an automatic approval within minutes. However, a small number of cases require manual review. The Home Office recommends applying at least 3 working days before travel. If refused, there is no right of appeal — you would need to apply for a full UK visa.
5
Travel on the Same Passport
Your ETA is digitally linked to your passport — no paper copy needed.
Your approved ETA is digitally linked to the passport you used to apply. You do not need to print a copy. However, keeping a screenshot or PDF for your records is advised. You must travel with the same passport — using a different passport will cause issues at check-in.

The Dual Nationals Problem
⚠️ British Dual Nationals Cannot Apply for an ETA
British dual nationals — those who hold both a UK passport and a foreign passport — are legally exempt from the ETA. But carriers have no way to verify British citizenship from a foreign passport alone. From 25 February 2026, airlines, ferries, and rail operators including Eurostar are required to deny boarding to anyone who cannot prove their right to enter the UK digitally. Dual nationals must present one of the following:
Digital CoE linked to UKVI account from 26 Feb 2026. One-time application. Apply on gov.uk →
“The ETA scheme is a vital part of our work to strengthen the UK’s border security, helping to deliver a more efficient and modern service that works for both visitors and the British public. I’d urge anyone wanting to travel to the UK to ensure they are travel ready and have the right permission, to make their journey much smoother.”
It depends. If you are transiting airside — staying in the departure area without passing through passport control — you do not need an ETA. However, if your transit requires you to clear UK border control (landside transit), you do need an ETA. Check with your airline before travel. Home Office ETA Factsheet →
No. There is no right of statutory appeal for a refused ETA. You will be told the reason for refusal. If you wish to travel to the UK, you would need to apply for a full UK visa instead. ETA Guidance PDF →
No — if you already hold a valid UK eVisa, you do not need an ETA. However, you must ensure your current passport details are linked and up to date in your UKVI account. Failure to update your details can result in boarding denial even with a valid eVisa.
A UK ETA is valid for 2 years from the date of approval, or until your passport expires — whichever is sooner. During this period, you can make multiple trips to the UK. Each visit can be for up to 6 months. An ETA covers tourism, business, and short-term study, but not longer work or study requiring a visa.
No. An ETA gives you permission to travel to the UK, but not an automatic right to enter. You still need to pass through UK Border Force passport control on arrival. Border Force officers can still refuse entry if there are other issues.
Your Pre-Travel Checklist
✓Apply for your UK ETA online at least 3 working days before travel
✓Travel with the exact same passport used when applying for the ETA
✓If you have an eVisa, update your UKVI account with your latest passport details
The enforcement of the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation from 25 February 2026 was covered above, including the mandatory requirement for non-visa nationals from 85 countries, the specific documentation challenges for British dual nationals, the application process and costs, airside transit exemptions, refusal procedures, and the shift to digital Certificates of Entitlement. The transition to eVisas and the government’s contactless border strategy were also addressed, alongside the programme’s published revenue figures of £383 million as of January 2026.
