Three Tuns Brewery has issued an urgent recall for several of its beer products because they contain wheat and barley (gluten) that isn’t mentioned on the label. This oversight creates a serious health risk for people with gluten allergies, intolerances, or coeliac disease.

The recall affects five different beer varieties with best-before dates stretching far into the future – all dates up to and including August 2026 are impacted. Products being pulled from shelves include Three Tuns XXX (both in 440ml cans and 500ml bottles), as well as four other varieties that come in 500ml bottles: Cleric’s Cure, Stout, Best, and Solstice.

For anyone with gluten sensitivity, consuming these beers could trigger harmful reactions. Symptoms of gluten exposure can range from uncomfortable digestive issues to more serious health complications, especially for those with coeliac disease – an autoimmune condition where gluten damages the small intestine.

The brewery has already begun removing these products from store shelves and has placed warning notices at points of sale where the beers were sold. These notices explain the recall reason and provide instructions for customers.

This type of recall, known as an Allergy Alert, is issued by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) when a product poses a specific risk to people with food allergies. The FSA monitors food safety across England and Wales and regularly issues these alerts to protect consumers from unmarked allergens.

Food recalls happen for various reasons, but missing or incorrect allergy information is one of the most common. When this happens, products are either “withdrawn” (removed from store shelves) or “recalled” (customers are asked to return products they’ve already purchased).

The current recall applies to products sold in England and Wales, and the FSA has given it the reference number FSA-AA-49-2025.

For consumers with gluten sensitivities, this incident highlights the importance of checking labels carefully, even on products you’ve purchased before, as ingredients or manufacturing processes can change. The FSA’s alert system helps provide an additional safety net when labeling errors do occur.
