A grass fire broke out near Melbourne Airport on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at 2:53 pm AEST. The blaze started on Loemans Road in Bulla and has spread southeast toward Deep Creek and Melbourne Airport’s northwest corner.

As of 5:25 pm, the fire covered approximately 1,070 hectares and remained uncontrolled, according to the VicEmergency update at Advice level. Twenty-three Country Fire Authority (CFA) brigades are on the scene with aerial support.

“Operations are not currently affected. Flights continue to arrive and depart as normal,” said Melbourne Airport spokesperson Andrew Lund in an interview with 3AW Drive.

Fire crews are establishing containment lines along Deep Creek gully, using backburning techniques where safe, and deploying water-bombing aircraft to stop the southeastern movement of the fire per ABC Emergency updates.

For motorists, the Tullamarine Freeway and Sunbury Road remain open but may experience reduced visibility from smoke. Drivers should slow down and use headlights as advised by emergency services.

The CFA has issued three key advisories for nearby residents:

  1. Keep roads clear for emergency vehicles
  2. Stay near shelter if smoke affects visibility
  3. Monitor VicEmergency website and app for updates
