A new electric pickup truck is coming in 2027, and it’s turning heads with its bold design. Chinese carmaker GAC showed off their Pickup 01 at the Shanghai Auto Show, bringing fresh competition to trucks like the Tesla Cybertruck.
The numbers tell an interesting story. Chinese companies shipped 62,000 pickup trucks overseas in early 2025, up 31% from the year before. That’s almost half of all their pickup sales, showing strong demand outside China.
“We built this truck to work everywhere – from city streets to rough mountain trails,” says GAC about their new Pickup 01. The truck’s GAIA platform adjusts the suspension system, power output, and drive mode to match different driving conditions.
The Pickup 01 looks different from regular trucks. Its sharp angles and future-forward design make it stand out in parking lots. But it’s not just about looks – the truck sits higher off the ground to handle rough roads better. Instead of regular side mirrors, it uses cameras to show what’s beside you.
Inside, drivers get a wide screen for navigation and entertainment. While the show model had some fancy features like a sliding steering wheel, the real truck people can buy will have a more normal setup to keep everyone safe.

GAC plans to sell their truck in many countries. Australia, Saudi Arabia, Chile, and Mexico are first on the list. This makes sense since pickup trucks make up a big chunk of global car sales – about one in every twelve cars sold worldwide is a pickup.
The truck comes with GAC’s X-SouL Safety Shield, their advanced driver-assistance system. For weekend adventures, the big wheels and high ground clearance mean you can drive places regular cars can’t reach.
Electric pickups are becoming more popular worldwide. Ford sells the F-150 Lightning, and newer companies like Rivian offer their own electric trucks. GAC wants to compete by offering something new and different.

What we don’t know yet is how far the truck can drive on one charge, how much power it has, or how much it will cost. GAC will share these important details as we get closer to 2027 when people can buy the truck.
For pickup truck fans, this means more choices are coming. Whether you need a truck for work or weekend fun, another option is joining the electric pickup lineup. As more companies build electric trucks, buyers get more chances to find one that fits their needs and budget.
