Over 300,000 Cosco kitchen step stools sold nationwide have been recalled due to a serious safety hazard. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced on July 31, 2025, that the Cosco 2-Step Kitchen Stepper has a faulty safety bar that can detach or break during use, creating a dangerous fall risk.
This safety action involves roughly 302,000 units purchased in the United States plus another 11,000 sold in Canada. These step stools were sold at major retailers including Target, Walmart, Home Depot, Lowe’s, and BJ’s Wholesale Club, as well as online through Amazon, Wayfair, and Overstock from February 2021 through July 2025. Prices ranged from $56 to $70.
This presents a significant danger – the company has documented 34 instances where the safety bar failed by breaking or coming loose, with two cases resulting in injuries to the head. All affected models feature a folding design with two steps and a safety bar attached to the back.
“Consumers should stop using the safety bar on the recalled kitchen stepper immediately and store the stepper away from children until repaired,” advises the CPSC in their recall notice.

Dorel Home Furnishings, which operates as Cosco Home and Office Products, is offering a free repair kit that includes a sliding locking mechanism to secure the safety bar. The package includes detailed setup instructions and a new warning sticker to attach to the step stool.
One Consumer Reports reviewer highlighted the severity of the problem, noting: “The safety bar does not latch securely at all.” The failure led to a child falling and breaking an arm when the bar gave way.
When asked about providing refunds instead of repair kits, a Dorel representative stated that refunds “should not be necessary because the stepper is a functioning step stool without the use of the safety bar.”
For a no-cost repair solution, customers should reach out to Dorel by phone at 888-628-3778 on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Eastern Time, send an email to [email protected], or go to the Cosco website and select the ‘SAFETY NOTICES’ tab. Reference recall number 25-412 when contacting them.
