The Air Force has identified the service member who died following a rappelling demonstration at the Alamodome in San Antonio as Tech. Sgt. Ian Patterson, a Tactical Air Control Party instructor with the 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2, at Joint Base San Antonio, and the recipient of the Air Force Special Warfare Enlisted Instructor of the Year award in 2022.

Patterson was one of four airmen rappelling from the Alamodome rafters to the field as part of UTSA’s annual Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans pregame ceremony on Saturday, October 18. Videos posted online show his rope appearing to unravel too quickly; he lost control while descending, slid down the rope and landed hard on the field approximately 170 feet below. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Military investigators are examining the incident. No cause has been officially confirmed. The incident remains under investigation and the investigation timeline has not been set.

Who Was Tech. Sgt. Patterson

Ian Patterson had 15 years of service. Tactical Air Control Party specialists direct air strikes in support of ground forces and are part of Air Force Special Warfare, the branch that trains airmen for combat search and rescue, special tactics, and direct action support. In 2022, he received the Air Force Special Warfare Enlisted Instructor of the Year award at the headquarters level. Air Force Special Warfare: what these units train for

The Alamodome's Condition and What It Has to Do With This

Because the accident occurred at the Alamodome, questions have appeared publicly about whether the venue’s infrastructure was involved. Investigators have not publicly identified a venue defect as a contributing factor.

San Antonio’s municipal records show the city deferred major Alamodome renovations to 2035. In June 2026, the city allocated $2.3 million to replace a six-year-old scoreboard with a new LED system; the original scoreboard had worn from repeated moves and reconfigurations around the dome over its lifespan. That scoreboard replacement and the deferred renovation timeline are part of routine facility management for a 33-year-old arena and are separate matters from the investigation into Saturday’s incident.

What the Demonstration Involved

Rappelling demonstrations at civilian sporting events serve recruitment and public engagement purposes. Patterson was one of four airmen performing the demonstration; the other three completed their descents without incident.

The demonstration halted following Patterson’s fall. The game was delayed approximately 10 minutes before proceeding as scheduled, with UTSA defeating Navy 38–34 in front of approximately 23,000 spectators. Emergency response at large venues: how evacuation protocols work

The investigation is ongoing. The Air Force has not released a timeline for when findings will be made public.
