A shrimp company in Washington state just pulled thousands of pounds of their cooked shrimp from store shelves. Bornstein Seafoods found a nasty bacteria called Listeria in their ready-to-eat shrimp products.

The company recalled 44,550 pounds of their cooked and peeled coldwater shrimp. People in California, Oregon, Washington, and parts of Canada bought these products. The shrimp might have ended up in stores across the whole country too.

If you bought Bornstein Seafoods shrimp recently, check your freezer right away. Look for plastic bags that say “Bornstein Seafoods” on them. They come in 1-pound or 5-pound bags. The danger codes are printed on the bottom back of each bag.

This bacteria can make you really sick. Most healthy people get fever, bad headaches, stiff neck, throwing up, stomach pain, and loose bowels. But it hits some people much harder.

Pregnant women face the worst risks. The bacteria can kill their unborn babies or cause early births. Older adults, little kids, and people with weak immune systems can get deadly infections too.

The good news is nobody got sick yet from these shrimp products. The company found the problem during their regular safety checks. They tested samples from their factory and discovered the bacteria growing there.

Bornstein Seafoods stopped shipping these products immediately. They’re trying to figure out how the bacteria got into their factory in the first place. The Food and Drug Administration is helping them investigate.

Don’t eat these shrimp even if you plan to cook them more. The bacteria can spread to other foods in your kitchen. Take the shrimp back to where you bought them and get your money back.

If you already ate some of these shrimp, watch how you feel over the next few weeks. Call your doctor if you start feeling sick, especially if you’re pregnant or have health problems.
