A major safety recall has been issued for more than 200,000 helmets that could put riders at serious risk. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of approximately 201,200 509 and 509 for Polaris helmets in the United States, plus another 26,800 in Canada.
The helmets fail to provide sufficient protection during crashes, creating a dangerous situation for riders. The recall stems from three critical safety issues: some helmets don’t meet marked certification standards, others offer inadequate impact protection, and many have a potentially dangerous chin strap design flaw.
One rider has already suffered a concussion when their helmet detached during a crash. This incident highlights the real-world danger these defects pose.
The recall affects numerous helmet models manufactured between 2020 and 2025, including the Tactical 3.0 series, specific 2023 Tactical 2.0 models, and several helmet lines with Fidlock® chin straps. These helmets were sold online through ride509.com and polaris.com, as well as at authorized dealers nationwide, with prices ranging from $140 to $900.
The Fidlock® issue is particularly concerning. The webbing on the chin strap may be incorrectly routed, potentially causing the retention buckle to separate during impact. This means the helmet could completely detach during a crash – exactly when protection is most critical.

“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled helmets,” states the CPSC. Depending on the specific model, owners may qualify for a refund, store credit, replacement, or repair instructions.
For helmets requiring destruction before replacement, owners must follow specific instructions to cut the straps and provide photographic evidence. Proof of purchase is generally not required to participate in the recall.

Both 509 (a Polaris subsidiary) and Polaris Industries are actively contacting known customers to alert them about this safety issue. Owners can contact 509 at 877-743-3509 or [email protected], while Polaris customers should call 800-765-2747 or email [email protected].
This recall is part of a broader trend of increased regulatory scrutiny on helmet safety across the powersports industry. For riders, the message is clear: check if your helmet is affected, stop using it immediately if it is, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions to get a safe replacement.
