A man in his 40s was killed when a light rail carriage struck him at the Surry Hills stop on Devonshire Street just after 1:15 pm today. Transport authorities have suspended services between Moore Park and Central as emergency crews respond to the scene. Commuters are urged to seek alternative routes and check service displays for updates.

Police report the man attempted to cross between two carriages when the tram commenced movement, trapping him underneath. Despite immediate response from paramedics, the man was declared dead at the scene. Formal identification is still pending.

The incident prompted a major emergency response with more than 20 police vehicles rushing to the location. Crews used a hydraulic jack to lift the carriage in their attempts to free the victim, while large tarps were deployed to shield the scene.

“There are pictorial and English warnings advising people not to cross between carriages,” Inspector Anderson Lessing from Surry Hills Police Area Command said at the scene. “Our preliminary inquiries suggest the man tried to cross while the light rail was stopped, and the vehicle started moving. “This tragedy follows a similar fatal incident from May 11, 2023, when 16-year-old Kyra Dulguime died in Haymarket after being struck by a light rail vehicle. Both incidents underscore the critical importance of heeding safety warnings throughout the network.

Passengers planning to travel through the affected area should delay their journey if possible or use alternative transport options. Police investigations into the circumstances of the incident are ongoing, with further updates expected later today. Commuters should check the Transport for NSW website or app for the latest service information.
