Subaru has given its electric SUV a major upgrade for 2026, fixing many issues that held back earlier models. The changes include better range, faster charging, and more power – improvements that matter for daily driving.
More Range When You Need It
The new Solterra can now drive up to 285 miles on a single charge – that’s over 25% further than before. This means fewer stops to charge on long trips. The battery is slightly bigger at 74.7 kWh, but smarter power management helps squeeze out those extra miles.
“The Solterra has gone from being an also-ran to an actual contender now,” notes Autoweek’s review team. The improved range puts it closer to popular rivals like the Tesla Model Y.

Faster Charging, More Convenience
When you do need to charge, the Solterra now works with Tesla’s extensive charging network. This means access to more than 15,000 reliable charging stations across North America. The car can charge from 10% to 80% in about 35 minutes using fast chargers.
A new battery preconditioning system maintains optimal charging temperature even in cold weather, helping the battery charge more efficiently – a notable improvement for winter driving.

More Power Under Your Foot
The standard Solterra now makes 233 horsepower, up from 215. But the big news is the new XT model with 338 horsepower. This version can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in under 5 seconds – much quicker than the current model’s 6.1 seconds.
The all-wheel-drive system has been refined, too. It now gives better control in wet weather and snow, staying true to Subaru’s reputation for all-weather capability.

Practical Features That Matter
Inside, there’s a larger 14-inch touchscreen that works with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Two 15W wireless phone chargers up front and USB-C ports in the back mean everyone’s devices stay powered up.
The Solterra keeps its 8.3 inches of ground clearance – helpful for rough roads and deep snow. It includes different driving modes for snow, dirt, and mud, plus hill descent control for steep slopes.
Fresh Look, Better Style
The front end looks smoother now, with new headlights and an illuminated Subaru logo. The black plastic around the wheel wells can now match the car’s paint color on some models, addressing a common complaint about the old version’s appearance.
Real-World Impact
These changes matter because they make the Solterra more practical for everyday use. The longer range means fewer charging stops. Access to Tesla’s charging network makes road trips easier. The improved power and all-wheel drive system help in challenging weather.
Sales numbers show mixed results so far – U.S. sales went up 40.3% in 2024, while Australian sales dropped 70.3% in early 2024. The updates for 2026 aim to make the car more appealing across all markets.
Looking Ahead
Prices haven’t been announced yet. The 2026 Solterra will arrive at dealers later this year. Given the significant upgrades, expect some increase from current prices, which were cut by $6,500-$7,000 last year.
This refreshed Solterra shows Subaru is serious about making better electric cars. The improvements address real issues that held back earlier models, making it a more compelling choice for anyone considering an electric SUV.
