Stellantis is recalling 91,787 Jeep Grand Cherokee Plug-In Hybrid vehicles from model years 2022 to 2026 due to a software error that can cause a dangerous and sudden loss of power while driving, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The safety issue stems from a problem with the hybrid control processor, which can incorrectly interpret signals from the Battery Pack Control Module (BPCM) when the microprocessor resets. This glitch can cut power to the vehicle without warning, creating a serious crash risk for drivers who suddenly find themselves unable to maintain speed.

“An unexpected loss of propulsion can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning,” warns the NHTSA safety report. What makes this defect particularly dangerous is that drivers receive absolutely no indication or warning light on the dashboard before the power loss occurs.

The recall specifically targets the plug-in hybrid models of the Grand Cherokee, also known as the 4xe versions. As of August 18, 2025, Stellantis reports no accidents or injuries directly tied to this defect. However, the company has documented 96 customer assistance records, 110 field reports, and 320 other service records potentially related to the issue, dating from December 2023 through August 2025.

Stellantis is still developing a solution for the problem. Vehicle owners can expect notification letters to arrive around October 23, 2025, while dealerships will receive alert information on September 11.

Owners can verify if their vehicle is affected by this recall starting September 11 by entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the NHTSA website (nhtsa.gov/recalls). The VIN can typically be found on the driver’s side dashboard near the windshield or on the driver’s side doorframe. For immediate concerns, owners can contact Chrysler customer service at 800-853-1403 and reference recall number 73C.

This recall follows other recent Stellantis safety actions, including a January 2025 recall of 63,000 Jeep Cherokees for a different power transfer unit defect that also caused loss of drive power. The company also recalled 78,000 Jeep Wranglers earlier this year over tire concerns.

Stellantis recommends that owners who receive recall notices schedule service with their local Jeep dealerships as soon as possible after the remedy becomes available.
