A major safety recall has been issued for RYOBI 40-Volt 24-inch Cordless Hedge Trimmers after multiple users suffered cuts when the blades activated unexpectedly.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced that TTI Outdoor Power Equipment is recalling about 113,000 trimmers sold in the United States and 15,000 in Canada because of a dangerous defect in the safety system.

The problem occurs when users press either the safety control or the trigger individually. Instead of requiring both controls to be pressed at the same time as designed, the blade can start moving with just one control activated. This creates a serious risk of cuts and lacerations.

So far, 27 incidents have been reported where the blade activated unexpectedly. Sixteen people have been injured, with some suffering severe cuts to hands and fingers. These injuries have included deep lacerations requiring emergency treatment, and in worse cases, nerve damage and permanent scarring.

The recall covers three specific models of RYOBI 40-Volt hedge trimmers:

  • RY40620VNM
  • RY40602VNM
  • RY40602BTLVNM

Only units with serial numbers in certain ranges are affected. The serial numbers can be found on a data plate on the bottom of the trimmer.

The recalled trimmers were sold at Home Depot and Direct Tools Factory Outlet stores nationwide, as well as online at homedepot.com, directtoolsoutlet.com, and Walmart.com from March 2021 through January 2025. They cost between $90 and $160.

If you own one of these hedge trimmers, stop using it immediately. Visit ryobitools.com/recall to check if your trimmer is part of the recall by entering the model and serial number.

Affected customers will receive a free replacement trimmer. No proof of purchase is required, and TTI will provide a pre-paid shipping label to return the recalled unit.

For questions or help with the recall process, consumers can call TTI Outdoor Power Equipment at 800-597-9624 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday.
