Sunita SomvanshiAround 780,000 Ryobi electric pressure washers have been pulled from the market in the United States and Canada after multiple reports of dangerous explosions. The recall, announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on August 28, 2025, affects two specific models that can pose serious safety risks to users.
The problem stems from a faulty capacitor that can overheat and burst, forcefully ejecting parts that have caused fractures and injuries to users’ fingers, hands, faces, and eyes. So far, TTI Outdoor Power Equipment, the manufacturer, has received 135 reports of overheating capacitors, including 41 explosions that resulted in 32 injuries.
The recall involves two specific models: the RY142300 (2300 PSI) and RY142711VNM (2700 PSI) electric pressure washers. The machines feature a green exterior with a spray attachment, a blue-capped detergent container, storage compartments for accessories, and the Ryobi brand name prominently displayed on the front. About 764,000 were sold in the U.S. and 16,000 in Canada.
Consumers could purchase these machines from brick-and-mortar Home Depot and Direct Tools Factory Outlet locations throughout the country, as well as through their respective websites (homedepot.com and directtoolsoutlet.com) from July 2017 through June 2024. They typically cost between $300 and $400.
Consumers can find their model and serial numbers on the data plate located on the side of the motor housing or near the tire. For the RY142300 model, impacted serial numbers fall within these ranges: EU17121D010001 through EU20256N180999, LT20211D140001 through LT21166D090999, and RG22154D090001 through RG23182N140999. For model RY142711VNM, the affected ranges are: LT21411D090001 through LT21425D090999 and RG21411D010001 through RG23182N140999.

Visit Ryobi’s recall website (ryobitools.com/recall) to check if your unit is affected and to order a free repair kit. The repair package comes with a replacement part for the defective capacitor along with delivery and assembly guidance. Customers can also reach out to Ryobi’s support team at 800-597-9624 on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eastern Time. Customers won’t need to show a receipt to get the repair materials.
This action marks another safety concern for TTI Outdoor Power Equipment. In the past year alone, the company has withdrawn other Ryobi products including lawnmowers with fire-related dangers and hedge trimmers that posed cutting hazards. The lawnmower safety notice came out in February following 97 instances of overheating, with five resulting in fires and two causing minor burns. The affected mowers had a push-on connector inside the powerhead that could overheat, creating a fire hazard.
Health Canada has joined in the pressure washer recall notice and reported that no additional incidents have occurred in Canada.
TTI Outdoor Power Equipment is a subsidiary of Techtronic Industries (TTI). The recall number assigned by the CPSC is 25-452.
