Queensland Police Toyota RAV4 Hybrid: Training Warning & Fleet Status

Queensland Police Service (QPS) driver-training noted overheating and temporary protective intervention in Toyota RAV4 AWD Hybrid patrol cars when hard braking is combined with high acceleration and high RPM. Officers were advised to pull over if warnings appear. Toyota Australia stated the vehicles operated as designed during such extreme scenarios.

QPS driver-training reported that RAV4 AWD Hybrid patrol cars may overheat and temporarily reduce hybrid output under extreme sessions that combine repeated hard braking with rapid acceleration and sustained high RPM. Guidance advised stopping urgent duty and allowing the system to cool if warnings appear.

In extreme training stress, the vehicle may enter a protective state (limp-home), temporarily limiting hybrid assistance and relying more on the petrol engine. Acceleration may be reduced until temperatures fall.

“Toyota Australia technical teams have inspected the vehicles in question and determined they are functioning as designed.” The company noted that during police-style extreme training, protective measures may activate to safeguard hybrid components. QPS referenced no such issues during normal duties.

QPS stated the RAV4 remains suitable for frontline use and referred to its Safe Driving Policy: vehicles must be operated within the limits of the driver and the vehicle. Vehicles, including the RAV4 AWD Hybrid, undergo internal and external assessments for fitness for purpose, with consultation involving the Queensland Police Union of Employees. RAV4 Hybrid (AWD) pairs a 2.5‑litre petrol engine and CVT on the front axle with a separate electric motor driving the rear axle. There is no mechanical propshaft. The rear e‑motor engages primarily on front‑wheel slip and at low‑demand speeds.

A training clip documented traction control shutting down during aggressive runs, affecting rear traction and stability. That specific clip did not link directly to the overheating advisory.
