Electric vehicle maker Polestar is recalling 27,816 Polestar 2 vehicles in the United States because the rearview camera image may not display when drivers shift into reverse. This safety issue increases the risk of crashes by reducing driver visibility.
The recall affects model years 2021-2025 Polestar 2 vehicles manufactured between July 9, 2020, and November 22, 2024. According to Polestar’s filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), an estimated 100% of these vehicles could experience the problem.
Drivers may see a “Camera is temporarily unavailable” message instead of the rearview image when backing up. The root cause is under investigation; earlier recalls cited possible synchronization issues between the Parking Assist Camera (PAC) and the infotainment head unit (IHU).

This latest action, identified as NHTSA campaign number 25V615 and Polestar recall code RP1069, replaces two previous recalls (24V477 and 25V280) that failed to fix the problem. Vehicles previously repaired under those recalls will need the new remedy.
The timeline for fixing the issue extends well into next year. Vehicle identification numbers will be searchable on NHTSA’s website beginning September 17, 2025. Interim owner notification letters are expected by November 7, 2025, with the final software remedy anticipated between late first quarter and early second quarter of 2026.
Polestar’s decision to issue a new recall follows regulatory pressure. NHTSA issued an Information Request on July 18, 2025, after earlier remedies proved ineffective. The agency and Polestar held multiple meetings; the issue was marked a critical concern on September 8, 2025, and the company decided to conduct the recall on September 11, 2025.
The defect implicates Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 111, which requires vehicles to display a clear rearview image by default when in reverse. Dealers will update the vehicle software free of charge once the remedy is available.
