The electric car world has a new player worth watching. Mazda’s EZ-60 electric SUV earned 20,000 pre-orders by May 16, just over three weeks after showing up at the Shanghai Auto Show this April. The car caught people’s eye with its mix of practical features and smart technology.

“The EZ-60 brings together the strengths of Mazda and Changan Automobile,” explains Masahiro Moro, Mazda’s President and CEO. “It combines our traditional car appeal with features that today’s tech-savvy buyers want.”

What makes this car stand out? For starters, it comes in two versions. The all-electric model runs for 600 kilometers on one charge. For longer trips, there’s a hybrid version that goes over 1,000 kilometers by using both electricity and gas. This means less worry about running out of power on long family trips.

Space is a big plus. The car fits five people comfortably and offers plenty of storage. There’s a front trunk with 126 liters of space – perfect for groceries or sports gear. The back cargo area starts at 350 liters and grows to 2,036 liters when you fold down the rear seats. That’s enough room for everything from weekly shopping to moving day boxes.

Deng Zhitao, Executive Vice President of Changan Mazda, points to the car’s smart features as key selling points. The dashboard has a 26.45-inch screen that’s clear and easy to read. Above that, there’s a unique 100-inch display that shows driving information right in your line of sight, so you don’t need to look down while driving.

Safety comes first with nine airbags and smart driving technology that helps prevent accidents. Five cameras, five radar sensors, and twelve ultrasonic sensors work together to keep an eye on everything around the car. You can even park it using voice commands from outside – handy when dealing with tight spots.

The car’s design isn’t just for looks. Special air channels and vents cut through the wind better, adding 41 extra kilometers to how far you can drive. On highways, these features help keep the car steady and safe.

Battery choices matter too. Buyers can pick between a 68.8 kWh or 80 kWh battery. The electric motor packs 215 horsepower and can reach 100 kilometers per hour in 7.9 seconds – plenty quick for daily driving.

Inside, the car thinks about everyone’s comfort. A 23-speaker sound system includes special headrest speakers that let different people listen to different music without bothering others. Parents can enjoy their music while kids in the back seat listen to their own.

Price-wise, Chinese buyers can reserve an EZ-60 with a small 10-yuan deposit (about $1.40). While final prices aren’t set yet, the car aims to compete with similar electric SUVs in the market.

Production starts in the third quarter of 2025, first in China and then spreading to Europe and the UK, where it will be called the CX-6e. Mazda has partnered with CATL, the world’s biggest car battery maker, suggesting strong backing for future electric car plans.

The EZ-60’s early success shows a shift in what car buyers want: practical electric vehicles that work for daily life without compromising on comfort or safety. As Mazda’s second electric car after their EZ-6 sedan, it marks another step toward more electric options on our roads.
