Nearly 2 million window air conditioners made by Midea are being recalled across the United States due to a design flaw that creates a serious health risk. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall on June 5, 2025, after finding that water can pool inside the units and create dangerous mold growth.
The recall affects Midea’s popular U and U+ window air conditioner models sold under various brand names including Midea, Frigidaire, Insignia, Comfort Aire, Danby, Keystone, LBG Products, Mr. Cool, Perfect Aire, and Sea Breeze. These units were widely available at major retailers like Costco, Home Depot, Best Buy, and Menards, as well as online through Amazon, Walmart, and other websites between March 2020 and May 2025.
The health impact is significant. Midea has received 152 reports of mold forming in these units, with 17 consumers reporting respiratory infections, allergic reactions, coughing, sneezing, and sore throats linked to mold exposure. An additional 45,900 units were recalled in Canada, where five mold cases were reported but no health symptoms.
“Pooled water in the air conditioners can fail to drain quickly enough, which can lead to mold growth,” the CPSC stated. “Mold exposure poses risks of respiratory issues or other infections to some consumers.”

People with weakened immune systems, respiratory conditions, allergies, infants, and the elderly face the highest risk from mold exposure.

Midea is offering two options for affected customers: a free repair or a refund. Consumers wanting a repair can contact Midea to arrange for a technician to install a new drain plug or to receive a repair kit with a new drain plug and bubble level for self-installation. Those preferring a refund must either return the unit using a free shipping label or submit a photo showing they’ve cut the unplugged power cord.
The recall includes all Midea U and U+ window air conditioners in 8,000, 10,000, and 12,000 BTU sizes, which sold for between $280 and $500. Customers can find their model number on a label on the front right side of the unit.

Experts recommend that anyone with these units stop using them immediately. Consumers should contact Midea at 888-345-0256 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET on weekdays, email [email protected], or visit www.MideaUrecall.expertinquiry.com for more information.
This recall shows how a seemingly minor drainage issue can create serious health problems when moisture accumulates in household appliances. It’s a reminder that proper drainage and regular maintenance are crucial for any air conditioning system to prevent mold growth and protect indoor air quality.
