A Lucid Air Grand Touring electric car just drove 749 miles (1,205 kilometers) on a single charge, setting a new Guinness World Record. The car traveled from St. Moritz, Switzerland to Munich, Germany last weekend, beating the previous record by 100 miles.
This journey took the car through mountain roads, highways, and city streets. Starting high in the Alps at 6,000 feet and ending in Munich at 1,700 feet, the downhill route helped the car gain extra miles through its regenerative braking system, which converts downhill momentum back into battery power.
“This range record represents a significant milestone – it’s yet another clear demonstration of the technological edge that defines Lucid,” said Eric Bach, Senior Vice President at Lucid. The record was set by London entrepreneur Umit Sabanci, who previously drove a Lucid Air through nine countries on one charge in 2024.

What makes this achievement remarkable is how far it exceeded expectations. The Lucid Air Grand Touring normally has an EPA-rated range of 516 miles – meaning the record drive went 233 miles beyond its official rating.
The car’s impressive performance comes from its advanced technology. It uses a large 117 kWh battery and a high-voltage system that operates at 900 volts – higher than most electric cars. Despite having 824 horsepower and a top speed of 168 mph, it’s incredibly efficient, using just 13.5 kWh of electricity per 100 kilometers.
One key to the car’s efficiency is its streamlined shape. With a drag coefficient of 0.197, it slices through air with minimal resistance – making it one of the most aerodynamic production cars ever made.
Car experts note that while the record likely involved careful “hypermiling” techniques rather than normal driving, it still shows the impressive engineering behind the vehicle. For many potential EV buyers worried about running out of power, this record helps show that modern electric cars can handle long trips.
The Lucid Air isn’t just about range – it can also recharge quickly, adding up to 249 miles in just 16 minutes when using compatible fast chargers.
The stock market responded positively to the news, with Lucid’s shares rising after the announcement. The luxury electric sedan, which costs upwards of $110,000, competes with other high-end EVs from Tesla and Mercedes-Benz.
This record highlights how quickly electric vehicle technology is improving. Just a few years ago, 300 miles of range was considered exceptional for an EV. Now, under the right conditions, the Lucid Air has shown that 749 miles is possible – a distance that would take you from New York to Chicago with miles to spare.
