Honda and Acura are recalling more than 259,000 vehicles in the United States due to a potentially dangerous brake pedal defect. The issue stems from an improperly secured brake pedal pivot pin that could cause the pedal to shift out of position, making it difficult for drivers to brake normally.

This safety problem could lead to unexpected brake application or prevent drivers from properly slowing or stopping their vehicles, increasing crash risks. Affected drivers might notice an unusual feeling in the brake pedal, illuminated brake warning lights, or brake lights that stay on even when the pedal isn’t pressed.

The recall covers three specific models:

  • Honda Pilot (2023-2025 model years)
  • Acura TLX (2021-2025 model years)
  • Acura MDX (2023-2025 model years)

Honda traced the defect to a supplier’s U.S. manufacturing plant, which has since closed. The company has moved production to a facility in Mexico where a camera sensor system now verifies proper installation of the pivot pin.

While Honda has received three warranty claims related to this issue, no injuries or deaths have been reported.

Vehicle owners will receive notification letters starting July 28, 2025. Dealers will inspect the brake pedal assembly and replace it if necessary at no cost to owners. Those who’ve already paid for related repairs may qualify for reimbursement.

The issue could cause an abnormal brake pedal feeling during operation, illuminate the brake malfunction light in the instrument cluster, or cause the vehicle’s brake lights to remain lit even when the brake pedal is not applied,” Honda said in a statement.

Honda estimates only about 1% of the recalled vehicles actually have the defect, but all potentially affected vehicles are being recalled as a safety precaution.
