Popular EastEnders star Heather Peace has finished her breast cancer treatment, marking the end of a challenging eight-month journey. The 49-year-old actress shared her story through a heartfelt video message, revealing how she tackled work, family life, and cancer care since October 2023.
“I woke up this morning and it was like the end of the London Marathon,” Peace said after completing her final chemotherapy session on May 12. She had surgery over Christmas and continued chemotherapy while filming her scenes as Eve Panesar-Unwin in EastEnders.
The BBC soap’s makeup team played a key role in helping Peace maintain her on-screen presence. They arranged wig fittings and styling to help manage the visible effects of her treatment. This support allowed her to keep working through parts of her cancer journey.
Peace saved her warmest words for the NHS staff who cared for her. “You are wonderful, skilled people. You treated me efficiently. You gave me dignity and showed me kindness,” she said. Her local community stepped up, too, offering practical help whenever her family needed it.
At home, Peace found strength in quiet moments with her wife Ellie and their three daughters – Annie, Jessie, and Lola. “I’ve narrowed my world,” she shared. “I’ve had the most precious time with my family, just trying to appreciate every moment.”
Her EastEnders family rallied around her too. “My superhero!” wrote co-star Lacey Turner. Kellie Bright called her a “warrior woman,” while Emma Barton praised her bravery.
The experience has changed Peace’s outlook on life. She now finds joy in simple things and values honest conversations more than ever. “Life feels very different now, but it’s wonderful,” she reflected.
Peace’s story highlights how breast cancer touches many lives. It remains the UK’s most common cancer, making early detection crucial. Warning signs include unusual breast lumps, changes in breast shape, nipple changes, or skin dimpling – symptoms that should prompt a doctor’s visit.
Today, Peace continues playing Eve in EastEnders, recently featuring in a groundbreaking storyline where her character married Suki Panesar. Her real-life journey shows how combining cancer treatment with work life is challenging but possible with proper support.
